Verb Drill: by units

Settings | Multiple Answers | Difficulty Levels

The rapid and accurate recognition of verb forms is a key skill that contributes to reading Greek fluently. This module provides drill in the identification of verb forms, such as is found in several exercises in the book. This drill has the added value of offering additional forms as well as the ability to display principal parts, the meaning of the verb, and the paradigm relevant to the form displayed.

The drill contains over 1600 verb forms. Exercise sets from Units 5-42 have been entered as in the book, and 15-25 extra forms have been provided for Unit 5 and for all Units from 8 to 42, with each set tailored to the level of difficulty reached by the relevant Unit.

SETTINGS

In the left panel are two settings for the drill.

Drill for Unit: the numbers from 5 to 42 correspond to Units in the book. If there is a verb form exercise in a unit, the same forms may be drilled by selecting the plain unit number. A number followed by x indicates extra forms tailored to the difficulty level and vocabulary learned by the unit of that number. There are extra forms even for units that have no verb form exercise in the book.

Show Answer After: use the pop-up button to set the number of tries you want to make at the correct answer before the answer is given in full. After each trial, click the Check/Show Answer button, and correct choices will change from black to yellow, while incorrect choices will remain black. If your answer is partially correct, then the black will change to light yellow while the correct choice is shown in yellow (for instance, if you identify a form as middle when it is middle-passive, this will be accepted as a correct response, with middle-passive turning yellow and middle turning light yellow). On the last try all answers will be shown.

If you would like to use the drill for mental practice or study without clicking the choices, set Show Answer After to 1 and simply click Start/Next Action when you wish to see the answer or the next form.

Operation of the drill: always decide first whether the form is finite, infinitive, or participle and click on the appropriate label. This choice makes visible the other labels, so that you may then have the proper choices for selection. Only one button in a column can be highlighted at a time, and the buttons in a column are disabled once a correct choice has been verified with the yellow color.

Additional information: buttons allow you to see the first principal part, all the principal parts, or the definition of the verb from which the particular form comes. The paradigm button opens the Paradigms module in a separate screen and displays the particular paradigm that illustrates the current form.

HINTS FOR FORMS WITH MULTIPLE ANSWERS

In the drill by unit you may be presented with a form that has more than one possible identification. Since such forms have multiple entries in the whole database with one correct answer expected for each entry, this module provides a hint as to which identification will be recognized as completely correct. For instance, "τιμᾶτε (subj)" will be offered to indicate that the expected mood for this item is subjunctive rather than indicative or imperative. "βουλεύσῃ (ind)" hints that the correct identification is as 2nd singular future middle indicative, as opposed to "βουλεύσῃ (act)" hinting at 3rd singular aorist active subjunctive or "βουλεύσῃ (aor mid)" hinting at 2nd singular aorist middle subjunctive.
