Vocabulary Drills: Instructions

CHOICE OF DRILLS

The choice popup at the upper left offers five kinds of drill.

The first two are drill by unit, that is, the words are grouped by the units in the book and given in the order in which they are printed in the Vocabulary section of each unit. The drill can be performed from Greek to English or from English to Greek.

The third drill presents the full vocabulary of the book (almost 1050 words) in alphabetical order, from Greek to English only. This is useful for review when a student has finished the book. But the vocabulary taught in the book is largely high-frequency words, so anyone proceeding into intermediate or higher Greek courses would be well advised to know them. Thus this mode of drill is useful to any intermediate student.

The fourth and fifth drills present random sets, which are useful when a student has become too used to the invariable order of the drill by unit or alphabetic drill. The drill can be performed from Greek to English or from English to Greek.

SETTINGS

In the left panel are two settings for the drill.

From Unit … to Unit: the numbers from 3 to 42 correspond to Units in the book. The user may select just one unit or a range consisting of several consecutive units.

Selected portion: in the alphabetic drill, the user selects from 21 sets are of 50 words each

Pool Size: in the random drills, the user selects how many words to be presented with in the random set that is generated from the range of units selected.

DRILL STYLE

The user can decide how much information to see with each click on Next Action.

Multiple clicks for answer: this applies only to the Greek to English drills. In this mode, only the dictionary form is shown at first; if there is further essential vocabulary information, then the next click adds the genitive of a noun or the other nominatives of an adjective or the rest of the principal parts of a verb or the case used with a preposition. For nouns, a third click is needed to reveal the gender. Once all the vocabulary information has been revealed, the next click shows the definition, and the next click after than brings on the next item.

One click for answer: this applies only to the Greek to English drills. In this mode, all the vocabulary information is shown at once (e.g., nominative and genitive and gender of a noun). The next click shows the definition, and the next click after than brings on the next item.

Drill mode: this applies only to the English to Greek drills. In this mode, the definition is shown first. The next click shows the complete vocabulary information (e.g., all the nominative singular forms of an adjective, or all principal parts of a verb), and the next click after than brings on the next item.

Study mode: all the drills have this option. In this mode, everything is displayed at once (Greek and English), and each click brings on a new item.

DERIVATIVES

Show derivatives with meaning: this checkbox determines whether or not a selection of English derivatives is shown along with the definition. For some people this information serves as a mnemonic when learning vocabulary, while other people find it distracting or misleading. Hence it can be toggled on or off. As in the book, some vocabulary items do not have any derivative.

BUTTONS

Start Drill: use this button to begin the drill after making any change in the upper settings that determine the pool. On the other hand, the user can change the Drill Style or turn Derivatives on or off in the middle of a set and this does not reset the pool, so the user should carry on with the Next Action button.

Next Action: use this button to click through the drill actions, either to reveal additional parts of the Greek information, to show the answer, or move on to the next item.

Show Paradigm: use this button to open the Paradigms module in a separate window for the type of word displayed. Indeclinable words have no paradigm, and for verbs one is always taken to the paradigm for the present indicative.
